«1»: New historical Formula 1 documentary

Last Friday a new Formula 1 documentary was released, 1 - Life on the Limit, in London's Leicester Square. This audiovisual work It narrates over almost two hours the experiences of the pilots who competed during the period between 1960 and 1980. In addition to having a significant number of archive images, it collects testimonies from up to twelve world champions, including Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jody Scheckter, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill, among others, who They help to explain to the audience what the Great Circus consisted of.

Paul Crowder, director of the film and known for previous work as Dogtown and Z-Boys y Riding Giants, has also obtained statements from prominent F1 authorities such as Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosley or the recently deceased Sid Watkins, former FIA medical delegate and a vital part in improving safety standards in the highest category of motorsport.

“Millions of people around the world watch Formula 1 racing and how the circus travels the world, but there are many who simply do not know the story behind it. Until not long ago it was a very dangerous sport. Our film conveys the essence of the time, while telling its story and giving an intimate view of the life and personality, struggles and triumphs of the main characters of the races ”, Crowder comments.

As told in the trailer offered at the head of this news, the truth is that they were two decades in which glamor and debauchery were progressively increasing. F1 was lived on the edge in many ways, without the FIA or the teams taking seriously the new driver safety requirements motivated by antiquated circuits and racing cars that were twice as fast overnight as before. Something had to change so that fans would not see such modern gladiators die frequently.

Nigel Sinclair, co-producer of “1,” who also worked on Rush As an executive producer, he has highlighted the high contrast between past and present security as the main attraction of the work, not without first regretting the need to show the tragic side of the queen category.

“The early days of Formula 1 racing were a very different time: the stakes were high and the characters were truly historical. Our film is a big screen experience in which we travel around the world accompanying the glamorous circus that surrounds this sport, which defies death and finally finds it. It's scary and very, very exciting, but ultimately it tries to convey the humanity and fellowship that existed among the pilots back then. " Sinclair declares.

"We set out to really capture the spirit and soul of Formula 1", says Shevloff, another of the film's co-producers. “The smell and the sounds, the charisma of the drivers and the pioneering spirit of a different generation. It was a very different period, raw and real. "

It seems that little by little, the film industry is paying more attention to motor racing. After having enjoyed as dwarves with Rush, we are now waiting for the filming of Go like hell, story starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt that will narrate the war between Ford and Ferrari during the sixties, and the arrival in Spain of this documentary. We will keep our readers informed.
