New Chassis: BMW M3 E30

MONOCASCO PHOTOS BMW M3 E30: E30 ONLY CLASSIFIEDS

La Giulia GTA by Alfaholics. Bill Lancia Aurelia B20 GT "Outlaw" by Thornley Kelham. The 911 993 Turbo "Project Gold”From Porsche Exclusive Series… There are more and more restomods that leave us with our mouths open mixing powerful classic mechanics alongside even older bodies. In the case of the GTA, the Giulia was vitaminized with the Twin Spark engine of an Alfa Romeo 75, while the Aurelia was replaced by the 6-liter V2 of the original model by the 5'2 of a Flaminia.

All this is not without its controversy, but no matter how much you are a follower of restoring each chassis number to its scrupulous factory state ... The truth is that there are more and more examples of restomod that achieve better performance while respecting the essence of the original model.. In that sense we would love to talk to you today about some fantastic new restoration of a first generation M3 but… No. We are really just giving you ideas.

Why? Well, because in a warehouse in Dallas, one of those things that emerged as out of a time tunnel has appeared: the chassis of a completely original BMW M3 E30 in perfect condition. So much so that it still has the factory labels! Unless BMW keeps a similar part in their warehouses, or another monocoque thus forgotten is found… This could be the only base of a totally new M3 E30.

WHAT TO DO WITH THIS BMW M3 E30 CHASSIS?

Through a group of North American BMW E30 enthusiastsWe have seen that this shell is on sale for about $ 30.000. Y there is no doubt that it is one of those made to mount an M3 first generation. If we look at the C-pillar -the one in which the fall of the rear window begins- we will observe that it is specific for the M3, which we also see in its wheel arches and the rear altered to fit with the gate on which housed its characteristic rear wing.

In short, a perfect excuse to go joining pieces around it until creating a new M3 E30. Yes indeed, Would you choose a different engine than the one originally mounted? In the case of some restomod, the choice of another engine is justified by increasing power compared to the series. However, with the first generation M3 we are talking about the S14.

On asphalt, he won, On land, it prevailed. In ascending races it dominated ... This four-cylinder in-line moves the 1165 kilos of the M3 E30 thanks to the 197CV of its first evolution and 238 in the EVO3 version of 1989. An engine created in just two weeks by cutting metal. And it is that the engineer Paul Rosche was based for the S14 on the successful M88 competition engine, a six-cylinder in line that had two of them amputated ... And after sealing the cut with a cover and other adjustments, new engine !

THE POWER IN ITS JUST MEASURE

If your lustful imagination is thinking what it would be like to put an M88 in the engine compartment of this monocoque chassis ... We'll tell you yes, it can, there's room. In fact, this already occurred to the guys at BMW Motorsport, but they themselves scrapped the idea during the M3 E30 conception phase. With its six cylinders, 3 liters and more than 5CV… It was a perfect heart for the 280 BMW M635CSi, but the lighter M3 E30 would probably make it unruly. Too much weight and power to the rear axle without any of the modern driving aids.

Considering what has been seen, the S14 engine is a very good option. Of course, as long as the one who acquires this chassis thinks to build something similar to a standard M3 E30. The possibilities that this find offers are enormous ... It wouldn't be bad to know in a while what happened to him, right?

What do you think?

Through the news from La Escudería, we will travel the winding roads of Maranello listening to the roar of the Italian V12; We will travel Route66 in search of the power of the great American engines; we will get lost in the narrow English lanes tracking the elegance of their sports cars; We will speed up the braking in the curves of the Monte Carlo Rally and we will even get dusty in a garage while rescuing lost jewels.
