Chubby Sound: Volkswagen Golf GTI MK1

When we made our list with 5 of the most legendary GTIs of the 80s We already said it: the Golf GTI is not visually the most impressive, nor mechanically the most rabid but ... Even with those few are those who doubt that when you think of a GTI you automatically think of it Golf GTI. For many reasons it is the most balanced, and therefore the one that has taken the lead when it comes to defining that segment of sports compacts with which to be able to make the purchase at the same time as certain steps behind the wheel.

And well, within the Golf GTI saga ... There are some debates about which is the most optimal. In fact, there is the issue that some GTIs even really are, since in the case of the MK 4 these acronyms came to simply define a sporty finish, which did not really mean that the engine had electronic injection. In short, a heated debate in which finally it has been the MK 2 who has taken the laurels of being the most representative.

With him the Golfs became more mature, more “car", but nevertheless… The charm of the first generation of the GTI is indisputable. Smaller and more primal than the others it was he who established the fame of the saga and made millions of young people - and not so young - want one of these compact sports cars more than any other car within their reach. Maybe one of the reasons was the sound, which you can enjoy in the following video.

GOLF GTI: THE BIRTH OF A REFERENCE

volkswagen golf gti mk21 soundEn 1974 Volkswagen launched a compact on the market with a clear objective: to reformulate what the Beetle had been for years to face new times in which the average consumer demanded a resistant, practical, comfortable car, with adjusted consumption - remember that in 1973 The First Oil Crisis broke out - and well, if possible ... Not devoid of a certain charm.

The result of all this was the Volkswagen Golf MK1, a rectilinear German who just two years after his debut saw a version appear that would read "upside down”Many things: the GTI. A "Gran Turismo Injection”That thanks to its sporty redefinition and the electronic injection system BOSCH K-Jetronic put sportiness within the reach of the general public, establishing a characteristic way of conceiving the hitherto nondescript compacts.

In short, a real jewel of fun thanks to a good weight / power ratio combined with good handling based on its short wheelbase. The ideal thing to have fun without giving up having a practical and relatively inexpensive car in the day-to-day life of the city. A new concept had been born within the range of popular automobiles; few can take credit for having inaugurated something like this.

A “FAT CAR” SOUND

In the video with which we accompany this text you can enjoy something that is not always taken into account when talking about Golf GTI MK1: his sound. And it is because, for how small it is, it roars with a sound that pulls at what many define with the wide expression "Fat car". And the thing is ... Well, isn't that exactly what this car was born for? To make superior car performance available to everyone?

The unit that we have seen in the recording of AutomannTV it is in perfect condition; so much so that we are more inclined to think of a very good restoration than a perfect conservation. Of course, whatever it may be ... The truth is that The rage that comes out of that tailpipe has a lot to say when it comes to reminding us how this little boy defined one of the automotive categories that have caused the most wet dreams in millions of young people with the pretense of a neighborhood driver.

Through the news from La Escudería, we will travel the winding roads of Maranello listening to the roar of the Italian V12; We will travel Route66 in search of the power of the great American engines; we will get lost in the narrow English lanes tracking the elegance of their sports cars; We will speed up the braking in the curves of the Monte Carlo Rally and we will even get dusty in a garage while rescuing lost jewels.
