In Video: The 5 Porsche Featherweight

Just a few months ago Porsche presented the most powerful 911 produced to date: the GT2 RS. The latest evolution of the legendary saga, a model with which Porsche continues to forge the legend of its 911 thanks to the 700CV from its 3-liter biturbo engine. A true prodigy born to awaken the most intense emotions on board… Its 1.470 kilos of weight.

Don't get us wrong, we don't mean to say that the GT2's power-to-weight ratio isn't great. Not much less, but ... What if we tell you that the lightest Porsche in history weighs 1.122 kilos less than the GT2 RS without giving up riding an eight-cylinder?

Despite the fact that a grown-up Enzo Ferrari had waved in the 50s that of “aerodynamics is for those who do not know how to make engines"The truth is that factors such as the way in which the car is related to the air or the weight of its body… They count. And a lot. In fact, Porsche has always had it very much in mind, making some of the most aerodynamic and lightest cars in the world.

To demonstrate this trajectory, the Porsche Museum a few weeks ago gathered the five lightest models of the brand in the legendary Austrian mountain pass of Grossglockner. Of course ... Quite a meeting at the top.

FIVE PORSCHES ON A DIET

Nervous, rear-engined Porsche's have always had a reputation as unruly sports cars. You have to know how to drive them ... Or they can play the odd trick on you. And that's okay, because these cars are made for that: to show character and have fun.

Dizzying as Porsche's chosen mountain pass is the character at the top of the list: a 911 2.7 Carrera RS from 1973, car that even today remains one of the most desired and admired Porsche. Shed a weight of 975 kilos Which, to be achieved, required to dispense with elements such as, among others, the rear seats, the clock and… even the ashtrays!

Saving weight always means eliminating the superfluous.

In fourth place we find a true beauty, owner of a body full of curves capable of gracefully crossing the less favorable wind: a 906 Carrera 6 of 1966, owner of an aesthetics almost exclusively reserved for competition since precisely this model was the last racing Porsche capable of circulating on the street.

Powered by a 210CV mechanic, on its tubular chassis a light fiberglass body is mounted that leaves the total weight in 675 kilos. A jewel of engineering used on this occasion as "camera car”By the German channel ZDF.

STEPPING PODIUM, HEADING AT 384 KILOS

Already on the podium we find ourselves in third position one of the most iconic Porsche in history: X. A model that although it is worth it, only yields about 44 CV ... They were enough to win the achievement of being the first Porsche to conquer the 24 1951 Hours of Le Mans in its class.

A prodigy where, although power was not the main thing, it was assets such as its resistance, aerodynamics and weight, with only 635 kilos for the aluminum-bodied unit that participated in that race.

Now in the last two places ... Obviously we are going to focus on cars that are the quintessence of the competition. That's why in second place we find a Formula 2 racing car: a 718 F2 of 1959. Equipped with a liter and a half engine with double overhead camshaft, the 718 was capable of producing about 150 hp, which… Put that way, it may seem little to you. But remember that we are talking about a car that only hits the scale 456 kilos, where everything is reduced to the minimum expression except the dynamic elements.

THE LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION WITH AN 8 CYLINDER!

And once you have reached the position of the lightest Porsche in history, you are going to allow us a pugilistic moment ... And it is that, at the top of the list, with only 384 kilos of weight and crushing acceleration galloped from its mighty 8-cylinder boxer… The champion! The car that stings like a bee and flies like a butterfly! 😉

The only one, the incomparable ... Porsche 909 "bergspyder". A car solely built for hill races, standing at just 71 inches tall and with a bewildering list of weight-bearing upgrades including brake discs made of beryllium, silver wiring instead of copper and titanium springs, the which are lighter and more robust than steel ...

An eccentricity of engineering taken care of down to the smallest detail, of which only two very expensive units were made they were even well accepted by specialist pilots due to their uncompromising behavior. And it is that ... Its only 384 kilos incorporated a 275 hp engine. A true madness only suitable for drivers with extreme vocation.

5 cars at the top, 5 essential sports cars in the history of Porsche, and not only because of their enormous lightness ...

Through the news from La Escudería, we will travel the winding roads of Maranello listening to the roar of the Italian V12; We will travel Route66 in search of the power of the great American engines; we will get lost in the narrow English lanes tracking the elegance of their sports cars; We will speed up the braking in the curves of the Monte Carlo Rally and we will even get dusty in a garage while rescuing lost jewels.
