Retro Valencia consolidates

It seems that this young fair, which took over from Motor Epoca, is beginning to establish itself in the calendar of classic fans in Spain. In just two years, its organizer, Eventos del Motor, SL -the same company that manages Retro Galicia, Retro Clasica de Bilbao and the AutoClássico do Porto-, has managed to gather in the 11.000 m2 of pavilion No. 3 of the Valencia Fair to more than a hundred exhibitors and some 22.000 visitors, figures that will undoubtedly ensure its continuity in the future.

The fair was open to the public from the afternoon of Friday, October 17 at 16,00:15,00 p.m. to 19:8 p.m. on Sunday 12. The adjusted prices of € 50 for a day ticket and € XNUMX for the weekend They have undoubtedly contributed to making the event popular. In addition, everyone who came with their classic car had a XNUMX% discount and free specific and guarded parking.

As in any classic fair, in Valencia you could see all kinds of exhibitors, from those who are dedicated to the purchase and sale and restoration of cars and / or motorcycles to antique dealers (whether or not they are related to the car), passing through sellers of books and magazines, of specific products for the care and restoration of vehicles, of tools, miniatures and, of course, all kinds of rare pieces, spare parts and accessories, many of them impossible to find in stores or scrap yards.

And although there was a lot of movement of people looking and asking, the truth is that professionals, despite recognizing a slight increase in business volume, continue to complain about what it costs to close any type of sale, since customers they demand excessively low prices.

Protagonists, the clubs

Retro Valencia, from what has been seen in its two years of existence, is aimed mainly at the classic clubs, which proliferate in a singular way in the Valencian community; and these, facing the viewer, they have been the true centers of interest of the contest.

Some of the most striking cars were on display at the Horta Classic booth, such as the DeLorean DMC12 with which Marty McFly returned to the future, a spectacular replica of the AC Shelby Cobra, a Chevrolet Chevelle in a 'discreet' mauve color, a Citroen truck C4 from 1929, a very interesting BMW 600, an evolution of the popular Isetta but with the correct number of wheels; a Biscuter, the most popular microcar in Spain before the arrival of the 600; and finally, the mascot featured on the club's crest, a 1936 racing Riley.

Next to it we found the corralito of the Valencia Antique Automobile Club, where visitors could see, in a preferred place, the elegant shapes of a 1929 Type M Stutz, an American car that is very difficult to see on our roads.

He was accompanied by many other jewels from the new continent: a Buick from 1915, an Auburn 851 with a supercharged engine from 1935, a Packard Twelve and a curious Willys Knight from 1926. Behind were also two beautiful Alfa Romeo, a Montreal, whose bodywork designed by the master Marcello Gandini is one of Bertone's best works; and a white Giulia Spider 1600 with a peculiar hardtop installed.

Another interesting stand was that of the Valencia Historic Vehicle Club, where the cars were exhibited in two areas, one made in the USA, with a very elegant Pontiac Eight from the thirties, a Ford A made in Spain in 1929, a cute '36 Chevrolet convertible and a spectacular first-generation yellow Ford Thunderbird; and another in which there were some typical representatives of old Europe, a Jaguar XK-150, an S Type saloon and a Porsche 356.

Anniversaries with muscle

The Porsche Club commemorated the 40th birthday of the long-lived and iconic 911 Turbo, for which its partners gathered a copy of each and every one of the different generations of the model, including one of the very few units of the first series.

The Ford Mustang Club was also celebrating its anniversary, as it has been no less than 50 years since the engineer Lee Iacocca developed this automotive icon. In its exhibition area, six magnificent units from some of its most emblematic series were showing.

The Alpine Club of Valencia was present with a good representation of models, among which the latest acquisition of its president stood out: one of the few units built in Valladolid, by Fasa Renault, of the Alpine A-108 cabrio. Although some details and a good coat of paint are still missing, it attracted attention in a privileged place.

He was accompanied by some copies of the venerated A-110 and some Renault in their «black leg» versions, such as a beautiful Dauphine Gordini, an R-5 Turbo «fat ass» replica of the Maxi Turbo with which Carlos Sainz contested the Spanish rally championship. of asphalt in the 86 and two R-8 Gordini with a magnificent race preparation.

And of course, could not miss, the Club of the Seat 600, the 124 and the Mini, omnipresent in any event that is related to vintage cars. In the enclosure of the first one stood out a Siata Formichetta and a Siata Ebro 50.

This year, motorcycle fans had considerably less content than cars. The Classic Racing Revival of Denia and the Vespa Club were present.

The professionals

On the part of the professional exhibitors, the Cars 1247 Stand attracted attention, where there was an American Ford model B from 1933, a beautiful Citroen DS bifaro, the Dodge Dart of 65 garnet awarded in the last elegance contest of Madrid and two curious vehicles, a Roa Reymar delivery tricycle and a Unimog Mercedes 401 all-terrain truck.

The restorer and preparer Saica Classic Motor Sport exhibited little but it was the best of the fair: in addition to the well-known TVR Griffith 200 competition, which boasted its muscular Ford V8 engine with more than 400 hp, he presented us with a wonderful Pegaso Z102 in the process of rehabilitation which did not always have the appearance of which it boasts at this time.

We refer to the fact that it originally left the Barcelona factory as an S-2 coupe bodied by Touring; Later, it suffered a very serious accident that almost completely destroyed it, and it was then decided to give it a new image and the bodybuilder Serra was commissioned to dress it with the elegant spider bodywork that it looks today. We will be attentive to see the final result.

We could also see some samples of both street and competition cars at the fairgrounds, among which stood out: a Porsche 911 of the first, with its steel wheels with hubcaps, something really unusual since almost all their owners usually replace them the typical alloy Fuchs; a '911 73 Carrera RS, although it is difficult to know if it was an original or a perfect recreation; An Austin Mini Cooper S from the first series and an excellent replica of the Ford Scort Mk4 with the Carlos Sainz participated in the 1996 World Rally Championship.

In one corner of the fair, the visitor could find some of the cars used by the Valencian driver Borja García, including the impressive Ford Mustang with which he participates in the European Nascar.

Next to, the organization paid tribute to the Ferrari Testarossa, An iconic model in the eighties who, although it may not seem like it, is turning thirty. Two fantastic units were on display, one from the second series of the original model and another from its evolution, the 512 TR.

On the right path

Finally, in the adjoining pavilion, the parking area for classic cars with which visitors come to the fair was set up. It is always a point where it is convenient to stop from time to time to take a look, since on many occasions you can discover authentic collectibles.

In summary, a great display of classic cars and motorcycles, that it is in full growth period, where you can see the good work of the organizers as well as the desire they have to please visitors; something that the Valencian Community deserves, because in it there is a huge fondness for everything that smells of oil and gasoline, whatever the era.

Let's hope that in the next contest the level of what was exposed this year will be maintained or, if possible, that it improves. "La Escudería" will be there to tell you about it.

What do you think?
