Stop me: Alfa Giulia Police

The restomods are a way of understanding a classic. It is true that they are not to the taste of all fans, for whom a classic should be preserved as it left the factory, but it is difficult to resist cars like this Alfa Romeo Giulia "polizia", which is spiced up with almost the entire catalog of Alfaholics parts. Stop us! Please…

Classic Alfa Romeos have something special. They have a reputation for being delicate cars, it is true (although some will tell you that this is part of the charm of the Alfa), but both their sound and their driving fall in love. They are cars with a soul, a very warrior and unkind, but a soul after all, which makes these machines an object of desire, of hardships and of moments that, according to their owners, are unforgettable.

If we put aside the romanticism that often surrounds the car, we have no choice but to talk about technique, design and performance, the cold data that shape any car that circulates around the world and that again, put classic Alfa Romeos in a good place among fans. Especially if, for example, we are talking about a Giulia GTA from the 60s, a car that can achieve spectacular valuations at auctions.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia was put into circulation back in 1962 and it did so under a sedan body of purely Italian design. It hit the market to replace the Giulietta sedan and soon established itself as one of the benchmarks in terms of performance and behavior. Today we are used to finding all kinds of sports sedans on the market, but when the Giulia appeared, similar options were very limited.

A very special Alfa Romeo Giulia Familiare Polizia

Among the versions less seen and less known by experts, is the "Giardinetta", or in other words, the family body. In those years, these types of cars did not have the same refined and sporty design that they look now, they were thought to be practical, sacrificing some design along the way. But nevertheless, As with other contemporary cars, such as "our" SEAT 124, the "Giardinetta" (truck in Italian) had its charm. and it was, among other things, the car of choice for the Italian carabinieri. It was also used as an ambulance and was manufactured by the Colli, Grazia and Giorgetti workshops in very limited quantities.

Precisely, one of those versions, the one used by the Italian police, is the one they have for sale at Straderial, a French company specialized in high-end automotive and very exclusive classics. However, it is not a conventional Alfa Romeo Giulia Giardinetta, far from it, it is a jewel restored to the last screw and with the entire Alfaholics parts catalog. It is advertised as Alfa Romeo Giulia super 1600 “Familiare” Giorgetti Polizia and its appearance does not let you glimpse everything it hides.

Alfaholics is a British specialist in restoration and restoration of Alfa Romeo, especially from the 105 series, that is, the Giulia. They can be considered as a Singer counterpart, but instead of Porsche they focus on Alfa Romeo, creating authentic dream cars. His most famous car is the Giulia GTA-R 290, a Giulia GT Coupé with the Twin Spark engine of the Alfa 75 rebuilt to reach 240 hp at 7.000 rpm extracted from a 2,3-liter displacement. And this is just a simple example, because everything is reconditioned, but without losing the charm of an “old car” and using many components from other modern Alfa Romeos or created for them.

The Familiare Polizia for sale at Straderial is not as radical as the GTA-R 290, but you don't have to trust appearances either, although the persecution of theft to casinos is registered in its service list. It is also true that a well-trained and knowledgeable eye on these Alphas will instantly know that it is not a normal unit and will be able to list the changes made in detail. Because having, it has enough.

From here we are going to highlight, first, the work carried out in the cabin, although we are also aware that it will not be to the taste of all fans, much less the most purist Alfistas. What there is no doubt it is the quality of the realization and the taste for details, maintaining an almost original look but with new airs and made by hand by the Dutch specialist HVL. If we look at its exterior, in addition to the color, the original restored “Polizia Stradale Green”, the rims are striking, designed and manufactured by Alfaholics inspired by the original rims.

If the police had had it as it is today, it would have been the terror of the "robbers"

As told from Straderial, this unit It left the factory on October 18, 1972 and was sold to the “Societa Autrostrade”, in Rome, Italy.. It has the siren and the different systems that were installed for police use and it appeared as it was sold, although with symptoms of needing a good conditioning job, during the Retromobile “Alfa Only” event in 2014.

The work carried out took four years, the first two for the restoration and partial reassembly of the bodywork and the next two, for the subsequent preparation that it currently looks like. Almost the entire catalog of components for the Alfaholics GTA-R has been used, having spent more than 90.000 euros just on parts, not counting labor. The engine, for example, produces 185 hp and reaches the wheels through a manual gearbox with a very close ratio, a racing differential developed by Alfaholics, as well as the brakes and suspension kit of the GTA-R.

You can rarely find restomod of this category for sale, although as often happens, it is a car "for your eyes only", unless you have more than 150.000 euros. Straderial estimates that the full restoration cost around that figure, but does not mention how much he is asking for this gem. Here we can apply that phrase of "if you ask about the price, you can't afford it".

If you ask me where my love for motoring comes from, I wouldn't know how to answer. It has always been there, although I am the only one in the family who likes this world. My father worked as a draftsman in a metallurgical company with a lot of auto parts production, but there was never a passion like I can have.

I really like automobile history and I am currently creating a personal library dedicated exclusively to motor history in Spain. I also have a huge collection of scanned material and have written the book "The 600, a dream on wheels" (Larousse publishing house).
