Chronicle: I Retro Malaga Salon

It is always good news that a new fair dedicated to classic vehicles begins its journey in our country. This first Retro Malaga was held between March 7 and 9 at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos in the Andalusian city, by the company Eventos del Motor
and for a premiere it did not disappoint.

Despite the doubts that a first edition always generates, as soon as you entered the modern and bright venue you could see interesting and varied things. The welcome was, for example, a Mercedes 300 SL and a modern SLS, both with their “gull wings” open. The old unit was one of the cars that the Automobile Museum of Malaga moved to the event.

Once inside, the fair was divided into two communicated pavilions, one dedicated to the exhibitors themselves and the other to car park for the classics of the visitors. This covered car park greatly enlivened the room and allowed us to see a large number and diversity of vehicles that also varied with the passing of the hours, as some were leaving while others arrived.

Integrating the free parking of classics inside the fair was a good idea

It was definitely a great idea this of allowing the entrance to the interior of the enclosure to the old cars brought by individuals, for various reasons: because it provided a color that normally remains “from doors to outside”, and because anyone could also expose their treasure for sale with the only cost of travel there.

In this way, the pavilion had everything: Many popular classics, some loose prewar and even exclusive things like a poor Citroën SM with matte paint and some other inappropriate "tuning", although the general tone was restored cars according to the original. and of good presence.

Among the “statically” exhibited in the adjacent pavilion, it is also remarkable how varied and numerous the genre is: restorer stands, area or brand clubs, miscellaneous items or paper… practically everything.

2- Very rare Zagst Coupé, based on Fiat 600

The spaces for motorcycles and cars followed one another in no particular order, and in any corner one could find an eye-catching unit, like the beautiful replica of a Ferrari boat from the 50s almost hidden among exhibitors of spare parts.

Good variety

Among all the present variety it is difficult to highlight something in particular: from an old Formula 1430 disguised in the colors of Lotus to a very rare Zagst Coupé based on Fiat 600, passing through the Aston Martin DB4 of the Museum of Malaga or the large number of " American haigas ”scattered in various stands.

The clubs also displaced good material, such as the one dedicated to the popular Renault of the 60s and 70s, with several units in very good condition, or the Malaga Vintage Automobile Club stand, with three imposing American cars from the time of The dry law".

2- The monstrous note was put by John Dodd, with airplane engine

It is remarkable the quantity and variety of American cars present at this Malaga fair, Among which were the Ford Mustangs of various models gathered in the center of the pavilion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the presentation of this mythical model. Fortunately, there was no current unit, something that had been happening up to now in other classic vehicle shows.

There was also a lot of space dedicated to motorcycles of all kinds, although we must point out the large number of Guzzi of the 65cc model that there were, since we had around 15 units and a club even raffled one among the attendees.

In short, Retro Málaga seems to have gotten off to a good start, which the Andalusian community undoubtedly deserves, until now lacking an event of these characteristics. New initiatives such as free covered parking for classics or the possibility of acquiring a museum + salon "pack" ticket that made both visits cheaper are worthy of applause.

We suppose that the visitors -among those who could see and hear many foreigners, how could it be less on the Costa del Sol- went home very happy after visiting what could be the benchmark fair in Andalusia, if it is that in subsequent editions the good course started in 2014 continues.

Fortunately my grandfather, dedicated to the automotive sector, had friends who owned veteran cars and participated in the annual rally that was held (and continues to be held) in my hometown ...
