Porsche Singer Targa: Reimagining the 911

It was the year 2009 when the British rocker born in Argentina Rob Dickinson decided to found the company Singer Vehicle Design in Los Angeles (California, USA). It all started in response to the large number of fans who had fallen in love with the Porsche 911 that Dickinson had "manufactured" for himself; It was a first-generation 911 (1963-1973), but conveniently modified - or if you prefer, improved - in almost every aspect.

The car was completely disassembled to the chassis. The basic body panels were replaced by others made of carbon fiber with shapes very similar to the original ones, but among other things, all the wheel arches were widened and a front was created with air inlets under the bumper.

The torsion bar suspension was replaced by a McPherson type with modern Eibach springs, while the brake calipers were replaced by a four-piston Brembo. The wheels copied the design of the original Fuchs characteristics, but with a noticeably deeper groove thanks to their 17 inches front and rear, with huge tires in sizes 225 / 45ZR17 at the front and 265 / 40R17 at the rear.

The engine for its part received no less painstaking work;  The Cosworth preparation it came to provide up to 425 horses thanks to a specific control unit and electronic injection, and finally a new invoice six-speed gearbox was installed. To top it off, the interior was reupholstered in the finest quality leather and the exposed sheet metal parts were replaced with matte-finished nickel-plated steel sheets. And of course "modernities" such as electric seats, MP3 radio or air conditioning were included.

That first unit was taken by Rob himself to Monterey Motor Week 2009 (where among others the famous Peeble Beach Contest of Elegance is held), and right there he received a flood of interested in acquiring his car ... or another of The same characteristics. And that is how this successful adventure began, which, as stated on the dashboard of each car, is dedicated to "Reimagine" that Porsche 911 first series.

About us It currently has more than 40 employees, who lovingly create these machines that are close to perfection by hand. Of course, it is not a typical restoration workshop, no matter how many English-speaking publications strive to define these works as "Restorations". What happens in the Singer Vehicle Design It is a true remanufacture of a car with a classic look but equipped with current technology, a trend currently very widespread in the United States that has received the name of "Rest mod".

So much so that shortly after starting the "serial" production of these Porsche Singers, it was decided to take as a basis 911 964 series (manufactured between 1990 and 1994), whose platform provides a more rigid monocoque, engines of up to 4 liters, McPherson suspensions as standard, ABS, power steering and air conditioning already equipped from origin, which greatly simplifies the task of “modernization”, since that in reality it starts from a vehicle of almost current conception on which another with a classic appearance is created.

As a good artisan product, the lucky owner can include all sorts of specifications to suit his taste. But yes, you will have to provide a Porsche 964 on which the work will be carried out, apart from paying a sum that in the basic transformation amounts to $ 350.000 (260.000 euros). And from there up, all you want….

Last of the Kind: Singer 911 Targa

The latest news from Singer Vehicle Design has been the presentation of his first work on a 911 Targa, whose debut will take place in the imminent Goodwood Revival from England. The modifications are the same as in the 911 Singer Coupé, but in this case the characteristic metallic arch of the first 911 has been reproduced in polished nickel-plated metal, a characteristic sign of the Californian firm, while the retractable roof is made of carbon fiber. .

Singer undoubtedly manufactures the dream of any “Porschista”, and we cannot deny that if you have a large enough portfolio, this is one of the most attractive options when purchasing a supercar modern… which also seems classic.

Fortunately my grandfather, dedicated to the automotive sector, had friends who owned veteran cars and participated in the annual rally that was held (and continues to be held) in my hometown ...
