Due to the shortage of products derived from fossil hydrocarbons, as well as the legal provisions on CO2 emissions and other pollutants, car manufacturers are being forced to explore new technologies for the manufacture of alternative engines to those of internal combustion.
New technologies?
Hybrid cars were already circulating in 1901, with internal combustion engines combined with electric motors housed in the rims (!)
It was then the Lohner developed by Professor Ferdinand Porsche.
In 2014, more than a century later, the heirs of Porsche are preparing to bring to the market the most modern and revolutionary car in its history. Modern and revolutionary, following the same principles as in 1901?
Be that as it may, qualifiers aside, the Porsche 918 will mark a new milestone for the brand that has just celebrated half a century of existence of its most popular car, the 911.
When will a 911 hybrid or fully electric?
It is the question that we could ask ourselves in view of the, if not original in terms of technical conception, at least spectacular 918 spyder.
The readers of The Escudería here you have the opportunity to admire a unique car exclusively, since it will not be the model that you will see on the road, but rather it is the prototype, presented in restricted areas and destined for its conservation as a museum piece.
We have had the opportunity to provide our readers with this world exclusive during the presentation of the car before the opening to the public of the exhibition "The Ferdinand Porsche Heritage: From Electric to Electric", which takes place at the Autoworld museum in Brussels from December 6, 2013 to January 19, 2014.
Just 3,3 liters per hundred
Production models of the 918 will be significantly different in details of aerodynamics, bodywork, interior and finishes. For example, the exhaust pipes will not have side outlets, as in the prototype, but through the upper rear part of the cabin, a functional novelty.
If we look at the photos, we will see that the windshield is unframed. Series cars will have a different windshield, with a reinforced frame that will act both as a defense in the event of a rollover and as a support for a removable roof.
According to a brief statement from the factory, the production car will be equipped with an 8-cylinder engine of 4.600 cc and 602 hp that, combined with two 285 hp electric motors, will total a power of 887 hp and will be capable of reaching 345 km / h, certainly not on our highways with drastic and absurd speed limits. Let us remember that in your native country there is no generic speed limit on the motorways - except in the sections that are indicated otherwise.
For now, Walter Röhrl has already broken the record for a production car on the Nürburgring (former part of the Nordschleife). Röhrl has dropped the 7 minute mark to complete a 20,6 km lap.
Those who know the Nordschleife can get an idea of what that means, and more with an expected consumption of 3,3 liters of gasoline per 100 km, thanks to the support of electric motors.
Without a doubt, the Porsche 918 will continue to be talked about The Escudería We will continue to be at the forefront of information.
