Updated 30/6: Paris will allow classics with more than 30 years to circulate
Following in the wake of other European capitals Paris has decided to ban the circulation of motor vehicles with more than 20 years of antiquity within its municipal territory, in order to improve air quality. As of next July 1, all vehicles must carry a sticker that indicates their level of contamination according to a scale, and those manufactured prior to 1997 they will not receive any.
Measure makes no distinction between classic vehicles, officially considered internationally as those that are over 30 years old, and those that are on the way to being, that is, those between 20 and 30. The new regulations provide for apparently small aid and subsidies for affected drivers but at the moment it is not contemplated to offer them no compensation for the loss of value of their vehicles.
Said aids are aimed at promoting motor vehicles more green as is the case of rechargeable hybrids, electric ones and those that run on LPG; in addition, these are increased on condition of delivering previous vehicles. Unfortunately, purgatory classics from Paris they are going to have a hard time to enter paradise.
The new Parisian regulations will only apply from Monday to Friday and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is expected to affect about 400.000 vehicles, that is, 1,1% of the park in the city of love. For motorcycles the regime is somewhat softer since only those manufactured before 1999 will be prohibited.
Infractions will be controlled in the old fashioned way, with policies placed at random points and fines that will eventually go from 35 to 135 euros. On the other hand, for 2020 it is planned eradicate diesel of the streets and, probably later, the measures will be extended to more modern vehicles and to the metropolitan area of the city (Grand Paris). The goal of contributing to dramatically improve air quality by 2050.
