Morgan 3 Wheeler P / 101, goodbye to one of the most charismatic models in the world

PHOTOS MORGAN 3 WHEELER: MORGAN

British company Morgan, started making cars 111 years ago. Its foundation dates back to 1909, the same year in which it presented its first project, a strange and simple three-wheeled vehicle (two in front and one in the rear), powered by a two-cylinder engine of Peugeot origin. Specifically, it is the engine of a Peugeot motorcycle, since at that time, the lion's firm manufactures motorcycles.

That artifact had only one square and was known as Morgan runabout, although it later became known as "3 Wheeler", literally "three wheels" in English. It was the first car of the British brand and was exhibited at the Olympia Motor Show in London in 1910. It was in production, completely handcrafted, until 1936, when the Morgan 4/4 with a Coventry Climax engine was presented. However, before this, in 1928, the sports version Super Sport Aero appears, with an exclusive JAP engine.

They were not cars that could be considered sports cars, but they did offer something special in their driving, they were a source of sensations that could not be obtained with another car. Not for nothing, its curious configuration of two front wheels and a single rear wheel, they completely marked his personality and of course, his driving.

However, the British brand recovered its tricycle many decades later, since in 2011 its production was resumed. Well, rather than retaking, it should be said that the original concept is retaken and adapted to current standards to create one of the most charismatic cars in the world market and one of the most special and fun cars of all that can be bought.

Contrary to what many people think, a car does not have to be excessively powerful and fast to be fun, it actually has to offer large amounts of driving sensation and in that, there is nothing better than a Morgan Three Wheeler.

When the brand put the “three-wheeler” on sale again, it did so in the old-fashioned way, with a configuration totally traced to the original manufactured until the 30s, a very similar design and totally handmade manufacturing. In addition, the customization options allow you to get something really interesting and impressive. There is nothing on the market that looks like a Morgan 3 Wheeler and there never will be. In fact, the British tricycle itself is out of production.

“The significance of the original 3 Wheeler is undoubted, yet the introduction of the 'current' 3 Wheeler in 2011 proved to Morgan and the world that fun cars still have a place and that the 'why not' attitude is sometimes the best. The P / 101 celebrates the pure and simple nature of the 3 Wheeler, and gives us the perfect opportunity to end an incredible chapter in the Morgan story. "

Steve Morris, President and CEO of Morgan Motor Company

The company has launched the Morgan 3 Wheeler P / 101a Special Edition which serves as a farewell, of which only 33 units will be manufactured for the whole world and which takes as its name the internal designation that the project had, when work began on its development before it was marketed in 2011.

As a special edition, there are technically no changes, these are focused on an aesthetic level. For example, the lenticular type rims, which are called "Aerodisc", incorporates auxiliary headlights signed by Hella and an aerodynamic cover that covers the passenger seat and is made of composite resin.

The characteristic appearance of its bodywork, as if it were the fuselage of an old combat plane, remains intact, but it bears inscriptions with the name of this version. The passenger compartment is configured entirely à la carte, according to the tastes of the buyer.

And up front, as always, commanding the gear, an air-cooled two-cylinder V-shaped with two liters of displacement brings Morgan's trike to life, sending the rear wheel 83 hp and 140 Nm of par. The change is manual, with five relations and from a Mazda MX-5.

To finish, we leave you a little advance of the 1935 tricycle that, if all goes well, we can try after Christmas ... 😉

If you ask me where my love for motoring comes from, I wouldn't know how to answer. It has always been there, although I am the only one in the family who likes this world. My father worked as a draftsman in a metallurgical company with a lot of auto parts production, but there was never a passion like I can have.

I really like automobile history and I am currently creating a personal library dedicated exclusively to motor history in Spain. I also have a huge collection of scanned material and have written the book "The 600, a dream on wheels" (Larousse publishing house).
