Stately Mercedes 300 S Coupé by Barraquer

Description of the Lot

Mercedes-Benz 300S Coupe from 1953, in totally original condition. Premiered by the well-known ophthalmologist Barraquer.

The 300 S (W188 I) was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1951, and was the first luxury coupe developed by Mercedes Benz after World War II.

Only 216 units were built until 1955 when they were replaced by the injection-powered SC model. This unit, registered in Barcelona in 1953, is incredibly well preserved in its original, unrestored condition. It is probably the best preserved 300 S Coupé of all those that exist today, as it maintains its original paint, upholstery and chrome ...

It has always been in the hands of the same family since it was released by Dr. Ignacio Barraquer. Ignacio Barraquer i Barraquer (1884-1965) was a Spanish ophthalmologist known for his revolutionary advances in cataract surgery. He was the creator of various novel techniques that would later become world standards; in his time they were considered "Almost miraculous" for being able to save almost totally blind patients. This earned him significant international fame among celebrities and royalty from around the world, who frequently came to his clinic in Barcelona, and even presented him with important gifts such as an impressive 540 Mercedes Benz 1939K Autobahn Kurier.

Professor Barraquer had a great hobby to the car, and he had even studied mechanics. From the time he acquired a Lion Peugeot racing "voiturette" in 1908 until the end of his life, Barraquer owned a large number of interesting automobiles. In his garage there was a 1910 Ford T, a 1920 Stutz, a 1913 Sumbeam, a 1922 racing Alfa Romeo RL "Targa Florio" or a 6 Hispano Suiza H1923B. With many of them he traveled all over Europe. His first Mercedes Benz was a Typ 200 Cabriolet A bought in 1934, and shortly after he received his most famous car, the Mercedes Benz 540K Autobahn Kurier. With which he made very long trips through the Middle East and Europe during the 40s.

The last car he bought was precisely the Mercedes Benz 300 S Coupe from 1953 that we offer up for auction. This car also had intensive use in the early years, being used on trips throughout Europe. In 1956 it suffered a slight accident and its use was sporadic until the death of Professor Barraquer in 1965. From then on, it had hardly any use and was kept in the family garage. The car currently marks 5033 non-verifiable kilometers, which are most likely 105.033 actual kilometers. It is kept in a more than acceptable condition, and has recently had a tune-up at an official Mercedes Benz workshop.

The bodywork is in good condition, with some normal wear and tear and a wonderful patina achieved over 60 years. The interior, in the best quality red leather, is also in very good original condition. The car includes an original set of gaskets for the engine still without brand new. It is located in Sant Pol de Mar, in Barcelona. The offers do not include transport or export, unless they indicate otherwise. To avoid disappointment, it is advisable to view the vehicle before bidding. To make an appointment for a visit, please contact Catawiki.
