As all readers no doubt already know, Angel Nieto died on August 3. We have not been able to give the news of his death until now but, as we always say in 'The Escudería', Better late than never.
Our condolences go ahead to the champion's family. A true out of series that, as we have read in countless publications that have paid tribute to him, paved the way to the successes of Spanish motorcycling.
Today it is hard to believe how this humble Vallecano knew how to advance until he reached his goal, a dream that no Spaniard had ever realized before. How did the mind of a young man of just 14 years imagine such great ambition?
Angel Nieto he made his way through uncertainty and, between 1964 and 1986, he won 13 world championships, 6 in 50cc and 7 in 125cc. Also 90 victories in great prizes that only place him behind Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi. A full-fledged motorcycling great.
Add it up and go on: 123 podiums and 23 Spanish championships on the back of their favorite brands: Derbi, Kreidler, Bultaco, Minarelli, Garelli… The 'Maestro' knew how to govern small displacements like no one else.
He died in Ibiza at the age of 70 as a result of a quad accident. D.E.P.
