2 Volkswagen T1974 PaCoMobil: Camperized in Mexico

PHOTOGRAPHS VOLKSWAGEN PACOMOBIL VAN: BRING A TRAILER

That the Volkswagen T2 has become into a popular culture icon It is something out of the question. Either because its aesthetic falls sympathetic or because of its appearance in the hippie and surfer scene, the truth is that this classic Volkswagen van is reproduced on thousands of prints, models and toys. In fact, you just have to go to any toy store or t-shirt store to confirm this information.

A point very in favor of this vehicle, which has not ceased to be constantly revalued in recent years. However, and market bubbles aside, the truth is that The VW T2 has many variants of the most curious. Born as a van for work, but also Sunday leisure, this classic Volkswagen has undergone a large number of motorhome adaptations.

In fact, perhaps one of the most striking is the one executed by the Mexican company PaCoMobil, which It camperized about 50 chassis of the Volkswagen T2 during the 70s in its workshops in Mexico DF Of all of them, only about six have survived, within which is the unit that you are looking at. A classic Volkswagen van Type 2 PaCoMobil Camper from 1974 recently offered by the Bring a Trailer portal.

VOLKSWAGEN CLASSIC VAN. BORN BY CASUALITY

Derived from the T1, the T2 has a very normal birth as the second generation of this vehicle in 1967. However, the birth of the T1 is much more curious, since it comes from a pure chance. After World War II, the Volkswagen factory came under the protection of the British government while the reconstruction of a democratic Germany was taking place. As is known, the successful KDF Wagen he continued his life in the form of the famous VW Beetle.

Well, to move materials within the assembly line of the utility, some transport vehicles with chassis and mechanics of the Beetle were used. From there, Ben Pon, a Dutch businessman who took over the distribution of Volkswagen in the Netherlands, came into play. Inspired by those little vans seen at the factory, proposed to bring them into series production with the idea of offering a practical vehicle for both leisure and commercial activities in a country undergoing reconstruction.

Thus was born in 1950 this classic Volkswagen van, which became a sales success thanks, among other things, to its prodigious load capacity. A capacity that used the rear arrangement of the engine to create great habitability, since the bottom of the vehicle is not restricted by spaces reserved for the engine compartment or transmission. The same formula as the Beetle but reproduced this time on a classic Volkswagen van.

VOLKSWAGEN T2 CAMPERIZADA. STRANGE PIECE OF PACOMOBIL

To a large extent, Volkswagen's commercial success was due to an intelligent market strategy. His models of the forties and fifties were destined to a European economy in full reconstruction, to the American economy in full swing. For this reason, when the societies of the Old Continent took off, beginning to demand more elaborate vehicles ... Volkswagen gave a second life to models like the Beetle or the T1 in the Latin American market. Thus, countries like Brazil or Mexico began to fill their roads with Volkswagen models.

That is why, in Mexico, even today it is still very common to see units of the classic Volkswagen van, produced at the Puebla plant since 1964 and until a little over five years ago by the Volkswagen de México SA subsidiary. A local production that led many bodybuilders to specialize in the model, offering camperizations like the one you see here. Built in 1974 by the PaCoMobil company, this quite habitable motorhome for its size has a 1-liter air-cooled engine mated to a four-speed transmission. All of this capable of producing 50CV, which is not a lot, but it is used to go in slow motion with this really not very heavy vehicle.

The unit you see is not in its original condition, since a few years ago it was repainted. However, almost everything that we contemplate in its interior does date from 1974. Something quite strange, since, as we mentioned, there are only about 6 copies of this Mexican series. This one you see just found a new owner in Texas. And be careful, because it was given by hand a few months ago after being driven from Michoacán, showing that he is in perfect shape. Quality of this Classic Volkswagen van.
