Tribute to Jorge López: Arriving and kissing the saint

On Sunday, December 21, the first concentration of classic cars that has been organized in this Madrid municipality took place in Coslada, which was used to pay a well-deserved tribute to Jorge López.

Jorge is a veteran pilot from Costa del Sol who has been participating in rallies and mountain climbs for more than 30 years. He is the owner of "Automechanics Jorge", workshop dedicated to mechanics in general and specialized in restoration and recovery of classics, authentic experts in Simca.

But what he is most known for today is for continuing to wage war in the Madrid mountain championship in the classics section, in which he continues to reap success with his unmistakable and "discreet" Simca 1000 Rally with rectangular headlights decorated in yellow, red and blue, a real giant killer. He is often seen riding around the Jarama circuit, bringing out the colors of more than one driver of sports car bells, when they are unable to reach the showy "box of matches."

With continuity

The concentration was located in the parking lot of the Coslada fairgrounds. It started at 10,00 in the morning and lasted until 14,00. From the first moment, due to the large influx of participants and friends of Jorge, it was seen that the venue was going to be small, as it was.

The intense cold of the morning did not throw anyone back, and in a short time the planned parking area was saturated with cars and people, to the point that there was no room for a pin, it was practically impossible to take pictures. Fortunately, the local police agreed to set up an adjoining lot so that all those who continued to arrive could leave their cars.

At one point, on a giant screen that had been set up in an area of the venue, images and videos of the honoree were shown, and the mayor of the town, after thanking him for his role in the automotive sector in Coslada, handed him over an honor plate. He also added that after the success of the first concentration, he promised to get down to work to organize a second, probably for the spring of 2015.

Quantity and variety

Regarding the cars present at this meeting, we were struck by how varied they were, since they could be seen from a few veterans from the beginning of the last century, such as a wonderful 1911 Daimler, a 27 Chrysler and an exclusive Aston Martin from 1933; even the typical popular classics that are never lacking in this type of event, the Seat 600, 124, 850, Renault 4L, 4/4, etc ...

The representation of American models was nurtured, the "Club of Friends of the Fantastic Car" came with no less than five replicas of the well-known Kitt, and another of Karr; There were also some Ford Mustangs from different eras, a gigantic '59 Lincoln Capri, an impressive AMC Javelin, a Buick Skylark and even a Ford Crown Victoria Taxi from New York, which although it is quite modern, is very curious to see in our country.

On one side of the parking lot there were some cars that are or have been part of the life of the honoree, such as his wonderful Simca 1000 GL and Rally, a beautiful Peugeot 203, a Seat Marbella prepared for rally or a Volkswagen T3, among others.

Jorge's friends also came with their racing cars, such as Diego Blanco's attractive BMW E21 circuit and one of the highly sought-after M3 E30 rally cars.

Classics from the eighties, like an Alfa Romeo Alfasud and a 75 Evoluzione in superb condition; a Seat Ronda, a utility vehicle that not so long ago saturated our roads and that today is almost impossible to see; an impeccable Alpine A310, a Renault 5 Cup of the first, and authentic, since most of them are replicas.

Two motorcycles also attended That attracted a lot of attention, a Vespacar and a Trimak 700, widely used in the 60s as delivery vehicles and of which very few units have survived.

Your Majesty

But the car that in my modest opinion stood out as the star of the day is a car that mechanics hate but that was and is a delight for the senses, we are talking about a Citroën Maserati SM in a very successful golden color.

Concluding, we will tell you that we take our hats off to the convening power of the organizers, and since they have promised to repeat the experience in a more spacious location, we wish them, at least, the same success as on this first occasion. We will do our best to be there. Congratulations.
