XIV Concentration of Classic Trucks

TEXT: FRANCISCO CARRIÓN / PHOTOS: CARLOS SANZ (WIDE PHOTO)

During September 21-23, the deep stain was invaded by no less than 140 classic trucks from different eras. There are already 14 editions of this successful meeting that, arising from forum classic trucks.com, has been traveling throughout the Spanish geography, as each time it is celebrated in a different place.

This year he was playing in the La Mancha town of Tomelloso, and the organizers set up an authentic "closed park" very close to the center of the town, where the more than 140 trucks they entered with shoehorn. There, the most varied vehicles could be seen parked in a certain order.

Classic Trucks, and each one in its place

On the one hand the 4X4 section with several Mercedes Unimog and Pegaso -"Egyptian" and Comet 3041-; on the other, that of the Leyland Comets, with its characteristic purr. A little further than the Sava, which included a couple of rare Pick Up, one of them belonging to the very first BMC, even more rare to see, if possible. There was also a small group of light commercials with some Jeep Viasa and Land Rover Santana, or a corner with several Capitoné vans for transporting furniture from the 70s of the Pegaso and Avia brands.

The oldest was, By far the charming Citroën B12 from the mid-20s, actually an old saloon probably transformed into a station wagon during the rough 40s. It is rare to see one of these converted vehicles in such a good state of restoration, and we must congratulate its owner for it.

The next oldest was the spectacular and huge Leyland Beaver from the 40s, an English mastodon arrived from Murcia that also shone like the first day. Likewise, the curious DAF Cisterna from the 50s recently restored by the Savall family stood out for its antiquity, which under that provisional registration had an old Spanish license plate.

From there, the pleiad of Pegasos, that took almost 80% of the participation. Dozens of Cabezones, Comet, Europa, Bocanegra and Troner, the number of the latter being almost excessive, given their modernity. And this is an issue on which we want to focus especially, since in the Tomelloso concentration almost half of the participants were trucks from the late 80s and early 90s. Scania, Mercedes, Volvo and especially the aforementioned Pegaso Troner.

Great variety and scope to do it even better

However, we miss some of the original Pegasus such as the Mofletes or Barajas, or some other Barreiros, as there were barely 4 units, and only one of them was a Super Azor of the "old" cabin. The rest were more modern models, highlighting the pristine C38 T equipped with a gleaming trailer.

A few Ebro –And two Thames Trader, the English originals that gave rise to Ebro with its license to Motor Ibérica-, some Volvo F88 or a Scania 110 Turbo, “import” models from the 70s quite rare to see in Spain completed the roster that traveled among other places the Lagunas de Ruidera, forming a traffic jam of monumental proportions.

Camionesclasicos.com Meeting: A Success

And it is that more than 140 trucks go a long way; In Tomelloso there was everything, and a lot of variety and quality in the restorations, although as a suggestion for future editions so many modernities should be avoided, since many of the models present it is still easy to see them working on a daily basis. At the end of the day there is a large audience - like the one who writes this - who will see "classic trucks" ... although with such a number of participants it is always worth going to see it. Until next year!

My name is Francisco Carrión and I was born in Ciudad Real in 1988, a place that was not at first akin to vintage cars. Fortunately my grandfather, dedicated to the automotive sector, had friends who owned veteran cars and participated in the annual rally that was held (and continues to be held) in my hometown ...
