Citroën 2CV Márcatelo, a special edition to celebrate the 82 Spain World Cup

Decorated like a sneaker, this version of the Citroën 2CV created on the last units of the model manufactured in Vigo and limited to 300 copies was made to celebrate the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Special edition cars can have the most diverse reasons, and it is a topic that has already been discussed previously in LA ESCUDERÍA. But big events such as Large sporting events such as the Olympics or the World Cup have been, and will be, a reason for manufacturers to create limited versions. to commemorate these great events.

By the end of its commercial life, at least in Spain, Citroën, which was already experienced in creating special models for his mythical 2CV decided to create a version to commemorate the 1982 World Cup which was celebrated for the first time in this country. In the past the brand had generated new interest in the old model thanks to versions such as the Spot or the Charleston.

The Citroën 2CV Spot was the first special edition of the model.

A CAR PAINT LIKE A SNEAKER

Although the 2CV Charleston was a great success that forced the manufacturer to expand its production beyond the 8.000 units initially planned, The Citroën created for the 82 World Cup in Spain did not have the same luck. Named 2CV “Márcatelo” and popularly known as “sneaker,” the decoration of this model resembled that of Converse-type sneakers.

For this the 2CV were painted on a Vallelunga red base, to later add the details in white and orange like the laces on the hood, which completed the sneaker illusion. The cars left the Vigo factory just a few days before the start of the world sporting event, and they hoped to convey to consumers the enthusiasm of this event that left behind icons of popular culture such as Naranjito.

Unfortunately, this special series was very attractive to some buyers, and although only three hundred numbered units were made, Selling them was a complicated job, so some dealers painted them directly red to give them a better appearance.. Nowadays they are a version highly appreciated by collectors given their scarcity, which has led many individuals to choose to create replicas of this very peculiar commemorative edition.

CITROËN'S FIRST SNEAKER

Although the idea of a Citroën 2CV painted like a sneaker may sound crazy, the truth is that the Márcatelo was not the first time that one of these cars was sold like this, because In 1977 the brand sold the Basket edition, with a very similar decoration, but in other colors, which was created by Claire Pagniez after winning a contest promoted by the brand..

This thing about cars comes to one since childhood. When other kids preferred the bicycle or the ball, I kept the toy cars.
I still remember as if it were yesterday a day when a black 1500 overtook us on the A2, or the first time I saw a Citroën DS parked on the street, I have always liked chrome bumpers.

In general, I like things from before the time I was born (some say I'm reincarnated), and at the top of that list are cars, which, together with music, make the ideal combination for a perfect time: driving and a soundtrack according to the corresponding car.

As for cars, I like classics of any nationality and era, but my weakness is American cars from the 50s, with their exaggerated shapes and dimensions, which is why many people know me as "Javillac".
