Citroën GS, classic of the fiftieth anniversary of the Car of the Year

17 of June - We finally have the results of the evaluations ready, which we review below. As you can see, the Citroën GS won, closely followed by his brother CX. It seems that innovation weighs a lot when it comes to evaluating a balanced car and, perhaps, brands should take note of it.

May 28th - Does anyone know how many editions of the Barcelona Motor Show have been made? Not me, but it is clear that the crisis is noticeable. It is not the fact that this year only 22 brands attended and only two world novelties were presented; is that there was not the environment that you could find, for example, a couple of years ago. The organization has made many efforts to "make up" this situation, such as making the event coincide with the celebration of the X-Games of extreme sports and with Formula 1, happily won by Fernando Alonso. There was also an area of "boxes" in which to test different vehicles but, even so, half of the pavilions usually occupied remained closed.

The one at Seat was probably the stand that had the most "life", with a magnificent Leon, perhaps the best Seat ever made ... However, as my father says, you always have to look for the pearl in everything, and in this edition of the show , although it seemed an initiative to "fill in" the empty spaces or the long distance between cars, we were able to enjoy a magnificent exhibition on the 50 Cars of the Year in Europe. From the beginning of the award in 1964, with the Rover 2000 as the winner, to the current Golf VII, the current champion of 2013.

I had more fun here than in the rest of the room. Each vehicle had its corresponding explanation, although to be fair, the quality of some of them did not live up to the award achieved in another time. I suppose that, against the clock, some specimens were selected that were not in a state, say, of series, so they were not fully representative of what the model had meant in its time. However, we must recognize the effort to bring them all together on such a special occasion.

Put a note on them

Attached below, in the evaluations that I propose, the images of each of the vehicles, until 1993, not without first apologizing for the poor quality. There was literally no light in this area, apart from the fact that the influx of people, curious to see the cars that their parents or friends had driven when they were young, made it difficult to take photos without someone involuntarily "posing".

It is worth noting that many of these cars they eventually failed commercially. Anecdotes that you want. The only ones that have repeated the award are, surprisingly (for me), the Renault Clio (1991-2006) and the Volkswagen Golf (1992-2013). On the other hand, it is a pity that no British car has it easy to be Car of the Year again, since the number of English brands has drastically reduced in recent decades.

As it will surely happen to you, I have an opinion (or more) of each car. But since it would be too long to publish them here, by way of summary I will say that I miss, for example, the Seat Ibiza, which revolutionized the utility sector in Spain, and that I do not agree that the Renault 9 won instead of the Renault Fuego.

Personally, among all of us I prefer the Fiat Uno, perhaps because in its first generation it was my first car; and also with the Rover 3500 from 1977, which is from when I was born and which I have always liked. Now the NSU Ro 80, seen live, is perhaps the most advanced of its time.

What would you say? What grade would you give each one? Comment, make your evaluations and let's choose one among all!
