Have a good trip Pablo

Last Friday, Victor Manuel Acosta sent me a message saying that, the day before, our mutual friend, Pablo Arango, had left. It was difficult news to assimilate. It had been several months (too many) that we had not seen each other, and despite the fact that in November I learned that he was a speaker at a conference organized by the Barreiros Foundation, I did not have the opportunity to greet him. Next time, I thought ...

Pablo was one of the people who did not brag about anything although, at 46 years old, he knew more about those endearing old junk that we call classics than all of us who hung out with him. Caprists included. I remember him sharing a coffee with us with his impressive 70's Mercury Cougar, perfectly restored, in his house located near El Escorial. Between mountains and between cars.

Or greeting everyone who came to him at any classic fair, always sharing a smile and knowledge. Nothing was saved. He knew the muscle cars in detail, and the Barreiros engines as if he had designed them himself. Don Eduardo's Dodge was his specialty: No one could speak with such authority about the Darts or the 3700GTs, their history, their secrets and their restorations.

He walked around half of Spain with a Grand Cherokee V8 and a trailer, moving classics or buying parts for his cars. Even Victor and I got to meet him in San Martín de la Vega with his Jeep loaded with a lift that he had just bought. He would take it to his new home in the Palencia countryside, to continue taking care of his vehicles with the meticulous affection he devoted to them. He knew how to take care of and enjoy a Seat 850 Coupé just like a Renault 6 or a 4L, a vehicle he shared with Nacho Sáenz de Cámara to make a route like the old ones, crossing towns and regional roads. Like 40 years ago. The way he liked it.

An entrepreneur always linked to preserving the "old" cars that fell into his hands, he had an enviable long career in this classic world. Many know her better than I do. I trust that some of them will have some time to put it on paper, on a website, and we can read it with the love and respect that Pablo deserves.

I do not know which vehicle you have chosen to make your trip. You may have been comfortably driving a Dodge down a freeway, wanted to show off that red 850 Coupe, or chose to enjoy your 4L on back roads. Whatever the way it may be, he has left us his knowledge, his projects, his endearing treatment, his way of telling the ins and outs of a restoration, or his stories about any classic that came along. Without fanfare, without boasting. Slowly, with that escaped biker physique of Easy Ryder, but with a calm voice and a permanent smile.

Pablo, when we cross paths, I hope you have time to spend a little more time with us and tell us everything you have seen on those roads of God.

Have a good trip, friend.
