Brake pads: when and how to change them

Brakes are an essential component for driving any type of vehicle. The safety of drivers and other road users depends on the proper functioning of these components present in one way or another in virtually all vehicles.

Brake pads play a leading role in the function carried out by the brakes. When you step on the brake pedal, the brake fluid transmits this pressure to the pistons, which are responsible for moving the calipers that hold the pads. When moving these calipers, the brake pads come into contact on both sides of the brake disc, generating friction. This friction causes the wheel to slow down, transforming the kinetic energy into heat.

When to change the brake pads

Brake pads wear due to their function. That is why regular maintenance should always be carried out to guarantee the proper functioning of these important elements. The frequency at which these must be replaced will depend a lot on different factors, such as driving style. However, it can be said that on average the pads on the front wheels of a car should be replaced every 60.000 kilometers and those on the rear wheels every 120.000 kilometers.
