This year he had to go up to the next step, Formula 3, a necessary step to obtain the super license that would give him access to Formula 1. He was very clear about what he wanted and how to get it. He raced for New Zealand's West Surrey Racing team, for which he won the British title.
The season turned out to be considerably more contested than in previous competitions, with a fierce fight with Martin Brundle until the last race.
