At the end of the year, the Brazilian had not yet decided what he was going to do in the '93 season. He was aware that if he wanted to get back on the road to success he would have to get the steering wheel of one of the desired Williams-Renault, but he knew of the veto imposed by "the professor." Therefore, he did not know whether to take a sabbatical, whether to continue at McLaren for one more season or even whether to move to the US to race in Formula Indy.

With the help of his compatriot Emerson Fittipaldi, who had long been fighting copper in this specialty, and his main sponsor, Philip Morris (the tobacco company that owns Marlboro), he traveled to Firebird Raceway in Phoenix to perform some tests with the car. of the finished campaign.

After making a few touchdown laps and setting the car, he ended up stopping the clock a few tenths before Fittipaldi. Senna's adaptability to any car was amazing. At the end of the session he said that the car seemed very heavy and clumsy compared to a Formula 1. «I have already seen what I have come to see», he claimed. And he left.
