Preview: Techno Classica Essen 2017

Back to Essen ... 4:45 in the morning and the Clock chimes. 'I'm going to Techno Classica ', thinks my sleeping brain. This will be the fifth time I have attended the prestigious German fair, undoubtedly the mecca of world classic motorsport. I review the colossal figures while brushing my teeth:

  • 127.000 m2. As a reference, I am thinking of the 20.000 m2 of ClassicAuto, one of the two most traditional salons in our country,
  • 210.000 visitors,
  • 1250 Exhibitors,

As I get on the plane, I continue to mentally analyze the plans and numbers for the fair. Believe me it's awesome indescribable. I take it for granted that they like the classics and that is why they are reading me; Well, if you have never come, save a little and come see 'the greatest show in the world'.

My recommendation if you visit is that they dedicate at least two days ...

An opportunity to see the gods of Olympus

The Germans are organized, of that there is no doubt. When you arrive at the fair, perfect and very fast queues to get the tickets. Even so, it is advisable to buy them in advance; you can see the prices clicking here. According to what is offered, for me they are very cheap.

At 20:00 the fair closes ... And as always we have only seen 50%, and that we have not stopped too long.

We are exhausted, our feet are broken and our heads are on fire. I would like you to know that what you see here is not normal; the north is totally lost, to the point of being leaning on a 288 GTO talking calmly and not realizing where your buttocks are. No matter where you look, there are all those objects of desire that we long for but that most mortals see as impossible ...

Since the fair is huge, in this first hour preview I will only cite some of the machines that I have had a chance to admire: Maserati MC12, Bugatti EB110, Bugatti T35 (various), Alfa 8C, Ferraris, various 155, 250, 275, GTOs (2), F40 (3), porsches 959 (Various), GT 40, all the Porsche series, turbos, RS, GT3 ... Facel Vega, Horch (different models which are more spectacular), gull wings (I have counted 12) and, of course, Pegaso.

Techno Classica, drift towards postwar

The drift of this fair towards classic vehicles is increasingly noticeable (and not so much) High-end sports; certainly few were the prewar present. Essen is above all a lucrative business and the business of the classical world today is undoubtedly in the sports cars of the 60-70s onwards.

Going back to the pre-war period, the jarring note was, as always, the Horchs, Mercedes, Alphas, Bugatti, Stanley (steam), Rolls and, to my surprise, high-pompadour Packards.

Maybe they were not so few but next to the other 5.000 cars on display their presence was merely testimonial.

To finish this preview I would like to congratulate the Pueche family for the magnificent stand it has in the SIHA pavilion (where the best are). In it you can enjoy a magnificent Pegaso Touring Bodywork and the famous Bugatti that belonged to the Brothers of the Val and that has recently been restored.

Another of the Spanish regulars of international fairs is fornillos and its essential rubber profiles, which was also present.

Until Monday with the chronicle proper!
