The Auto Union Silver Arrows are some of the most famous automobiles of the 1930s. Its origins take us to the dawn of the current Audi brand, since its current logo was born after the union of four very leading German brands: Audi itself, Horch, Wanderer and DKW.
These revolutionary cars made history on the circuits, but the brand had plans to also leave its mark on the streets, because, although for many it was an unknown fact until now, The Type 32 was going to have a street version that was designed between 1933 and 1934.
Now that ninety years have passed since that wonderful vehicle in which Ferdinand Porsche collaborated that could have been and was not, Audi has reimagined that beast with V 16 mechanics in the most faithful way possible to how automobiles were built in the interwar period.
AUTO UNION TYPE 32: THE DREAM COME TRUE IN 2024
Although there is evidence of a test car built in 1934 of this Type 32 street car, the project was abandoned shortly after in 1935. And although this car fell into oblivion, many of The documents detailing its specifications survived the years, and have served as the basis for recreating a dream that never materialized.
The complicated task of creating a new silver arrow almost a century later has been taken on by the British restoration workshop Crosthwaite and Gardner, who had previously worked on the maintenance of the other Type 32s. The work for this recreation has been practically handmade, with how complicated it is to adapt a competition mechanic to a street car., but which is ready to be one of the centerpieces of the Goodwood Festival of Speed that takes place this weekend in the year in which this silver arrow would have turned 90 years old.
