31st Auto Moto d´Epoca de Padua

The city of Padova - or Padua, in Spanish - is a prosperous town located in northern Italy, about 40 kilometers from Venice. Famous for its prestigious university, it has also earned a name among fans of classic cars, as there is held every fall what is considered the largest fair of the sector in Italy, la "Auto Moto d´Epoca".

This year's edition took place between Thursday 23 and Saturday 26 of last October and as usual offered a great variety of articles to satisfy almost any fan; not in vain is it considered the "Essen" of the Italian fairs, although saving the distances, of course.

In figures, this past edition received close to 50.000 visitors, who were able to see up to 1.600 vintage vehicles spread over the 90.000 square meters offered by various pavilions and the open-air space between them.

National specimens

Inside the pavilions there were exhibitors from various European countries - apart from the numerous Italians - such as Switzerland, England, Germany or even the distant Netherlands.

Among all of them it is difficult to highlight any piece, especially for the overall high quality, But it is fair to talk about the two Lancia Lambdas from the 20s that the Swiss dealer Cristoph Grohe exhibited at his stand.

And not only because of the historical value of the model - it was the first self-supporting structure car produced in large quantities - but because both units came from our country, and even the open model still retained its original Barcelona license plate.

Italian mutations

As is often commented, the Padua fair is the place where many European collectors go in search of projects to restore during the cold winter, and proof of this was the large number of vehicles for sale ready to receive this treatment.

In this case, it is easy to highlight one: the Alfa Romeo 6c 2500 Touring from the late 40s, with its valuable “Superleggera” bodywork sawn off to create something of a “luxury pickup”.

The old hand-painted serigraphy from the motorcycle workshop that made the “monster” still conserved on its sides, and under the paint the hand-beaten aluminum plates appeared everywhere.

Some were scandalized by such nonsense, but for example I like it, and I would even keep it as it is. Of course, it is already known that about tastes ...

«etceterini»

Two other prominent and rusty ones were abroad waiting for a less wealthy buyer. Both had in common their original Fiat mechanics and that at first glance they were really hard to identify, and not precisely because of its beautiful lines.

We refer to the very rare Fiat Balilla from the 30s reworked by an "amateur" workshop in the 50s and the Fiat 2100 "En Plein" from the 60s, a kind of Italian-style batmobil corroded everywhere and bodied by the prestigious Vignale workshop.

Rarities like this are the most common in Italy, given the large number of bodybuilders and trainers who created their own brands from the mechanics of the great manufacturers, especially Fiat and Lancia.

So much so that there is the name "Etceterini" to refer to all these Siata, Stanguellini, Moretti, Bandini ... and a long etcetera, never better said.

Old glories

And all this without forgetting the many official stands clubs or brands, the latter by the way especially well represented. Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Audi, BMW, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Porsche, Volkswagen, Volvo and Toyota brought outstanding pieces from their museums.

As you can see, this count is missing one of the most legendary Italian brands: Lancia. It is a pity attend his disappearance, even the most important events held in your home country. Ferrari was another significant Italian brand that was not officially exhibiting in Padua.

The truth is that it was not really necessary, since we could stumble across various models of the Prancing Horse everywhere. Even an entire F40 was parked in a stand outside, in the open air!

Sales prices were usually high - not to say exaggerated - another characteristic that is becoming common in the "important" fairs that are held in Europe, where it seems that everything is to look at and not touch.

At least, and to complete all this display, no less than 600 exhibitors - always according to the organizers themselves - of spare parts and automobilia.

It was really difficult to leave without some souvenir in the form of magazines, books or miniatures, because Italians are true specialists in these subjects ... and in reality, in everything related to the automobile.

My name is Francisco Carrión and I was born in Ciudad Real in 1988, a place that was not at first akin to vintage cars. Fortunately my grandfather, dedicated to the automotive sector, had friends who owned veteran cars and participated in the annual rally that was held (and continues to be held) in my hometown ...
