Two DB4 GT Zagato Replicas to celebrate the bodybuilder's centenary

ASTON MARTIN DB4GT ZAGATO REPLICA PHOTOS: ASTON MARTIN - LAGONDA / GRAEME HUNT

We have already talked other times about the personal of Zagato's creations. Her voluptuous forms always move on the razor's edge. Along of its hundred years of history you can find better or worse resolved lines, but the truth is that a design from the Milanese brand will never leave you indifferent. While his interventions in Ferrari models have been rather controversial -except for the incredible 250GT Zagato Sanction II-, its collaboration with Aston Martin has the success by flag.

That is why, if a name is appearing next to Zagato's in the celebration of its centenary… It is Aston Martin's. Months ago, and summing up the Italian house's taste for eccentricity well understood, they presented themselves four versions of the Vanquish. With a total of 99 units, this collaboration renews the work between the two brands, having generated a lot of media noise. Anyway, the issue did not end here.

Reviewing the relationship between Aston Martin and Zagato, its greatest icon is the DB4GT Zagato. Designed by Ercole Spada, only 19 units were manufactured between 1961 and 1963. They are all preserved, their price being expressed in figures of 8 numbers. One of the myths of the classic engine that should not be presented, although Aston Martin has thought that perhaps it will resurrect. Thus premiered during the last 24 Hours of Le Mans the DB4GT Zagato Continuation. Another of the ways in which the English house is celebrating the centenary of Zagato.

ASTON-MARTIN DB4GT ZAGATO REPLICA: NOT AS FAITHFUL AS IT SEEMS

The work of the Aston Martin classics department has been giving people talk for some time. In fact, all this of the rebuilding of the DB4 GT Zagato has already been announced to us for months. Like the bodies in the sixties, there are 19 units planned. Yes indeed, these are not exact copies. While on the outside the bodywork is identical, the interior contains some surprises.

For starters, a new engine. The original was a 3 liters, but this one goes up one more to deliver about 7CV direct to the rear axle through a limited-slip differential. In addition, if you start to look at some specific details, you see that the seats are so current that you can even see carbon fiber in them. In short, are we looking at a replica of the DB4GT? Really only in appearance, since for many things it is an almost contemporary car.

Lo "almost”We say this by the absence of airbargs and other safety features, although it is true that it is equipped with the FIA-approved cage as standard. We will not talk about the price. Doing so would be as hackneyed as standing in front of a Velázquez painting and releasing, as a first comment, a "This must cost a fortune". Well yes, it obviously costs a fortune. But anyway, we are talking about what we are talking about (and it is also about making cash).

ALREADY AT THE NEWPORT PAGNELL WORKSHOPS

Of the 19 planned units, 10 are already in the manufacturing process (not counting the one used for presentation). All of them in the Aston Martin Works workshops in Newport Pagnell, a few meters from the brand museum. There, in his classics workshop, replicas of the DB4GT Zagato are handcrafted as we see in the photographs.

A process in which approximately 4.500 hours of work will be invested per unit, with the first deliveries expected at the end of 2019. All of them accompanied by a DBS GT Zagato. The jewel in the crown of the DBZ Centenary collection of which only 19 units will be manufactured to be sold, inseparably, with the 19 units of the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation.

A REPLICA "SOMETHING" MORE ASSUMABLE

Rummaging through the replica market we have found an interesting unit. It is for sale in the UK and is a DB4GT Zagato "Andy Palmer". As we see on the page of Graeme hunt It all started when in the late 90s a collector decided to transform his 4 DB1960 into a Zagato version. For this he turned to Californian restorer Andy Palmer, who made this almost identical body. Almost.

The truth is that it is still somewhat daring. After all, getting rid of the original body of a DB4 to fit a new one… Even if it is the replica of a seductive Zagato version… Raises your doubts. However the conversion was finally made, taking the opportunity to replace the engine with a 4-liter from a first-generation DBS.

Incidentally, power steering and a new camshaft were incorporated. Go, a custom made car that after two owners is looking for a third with 754.755 euros in the portfolio. It's not a bad way to celebrate Zagato's centennial, no, and it seems a bit less modern than its official brother.

Through the news from La Escudería, we will travel the winding roads of Maranello listening to the roar of the Italian V12; We will travel Route66 in search of the power of the great American engines; we will get lost in the narrow English lanes tracking the elegance of their sports cars; We will speed up the braking in the curves of the Monte Carlo Rally and we will even get dusty in a garage while rescuing lost jewels.
