More than 45 years have had to pass for the Renault 18 to have its own club of fans of the model in Spain, which finally and more than deservedly establishes it as an iconic popular classic. Its presentation was made in 1978, and with an extremely modern design that anticipated the style of cars in the eighties. This new sedan had the task of replacing the veteran and popular Renault 12.
The R18 managed to be sold in various countries, with a special presence and popularity in South America, but in Spain it had a very relevant role in the history of FASA Renault, since it was the Renault 18 vehicle in charge of inaugurating the production plant that the company opened in Palencia in the seventies.
A WEEKEND IN ASTURIAS
The concentration of the newborn Club Renault 18 Spain took place on the weekend of May 18 and 19, although the first cars arrived in Asturias on Friday the 17th in the afternoon. In total there were twenty R18s that arrived from all over Spain. those who gathered for this event of a club that, despite having barely two years of history, have a calendar marked with the most interesting appointments.
Proof of this is this great meeting of Renault 18 which until now had been unprecedented in the country. Unfortunately the rain accompanied the attendees throughout the day on Saturday, but this in no way prevented it from being a most memorable day in which cars and drivers had a great time.
And the Asturian roads are a paradise for those who are passionate about getting behind the wheel of a classic car, especially if you take into account the route established for that day, which passed through places like Covadonga or Gijón, including the mythical climb to Fito, one of the internationally known rally stages and through which many of the great national drivers have passed. All this without mentioning the fantastic gastronomy that the north has to offer.
Sunday started with a more than obligatory visit in this case, since for many When talking about Renault and Asturias, the figure of Fernando Alonso comes to mind, which excited an entire country when he achieved his greatest triumphs at the controls of a single-seater from the French brand, and which can be seen in the museum dedicated to the pilot.
After this interesting stop, the R18 delegation participated in a rally that was held that day at the La Campana Restaurant and managed to monopolize much of the attention given the large number of these participating Renaults.
